Your drug addiction treatment program may encourage you to keep a gratitude journal; sometimes putting things into words lends a stronger impact to their meaning. You can even express gratitude by doing nice things for others, such as buying a friend a cup of coffee or running an errand for your spouse. Gratitude is in your actions just as much as in your words.

Finding gratitude at rock bottom

The last place you’d expect to find gratitude is often the place you need it most – when you’ve hit rock bottom. Although you don’t have to hit bottom to turn things around, it can often be a significant experience in an addict’s life. If you’re struggling to find the positive in such a dire situation, look outside of yourself. Find peace in the sunset, or a small flower. Drug addiction treatment teaches that even finding small sources of gratitude can contribute to an overall attitude adjustment, which could be just what you need to pull yourself out of a hole.
